Tribute to Bernie Smith Note from the Chair, September 2006
Not only will the County feel this loss, but all his friends of the Democratic Party will mourn his loss. Bernie and I were just discussing his trip to see his daughter this past Wednesday. He was helping to staff our Democrat Booth at the Indiana Fair. I had stopped by with some political pamphlets and to check out how things were going. At this time we also discussed how grave the situation was appearing with Mayor Bob O'Connor. And what a great loss it would be for Pittsburgh, if Mayor O'Connor didn't pull through this tough time. Who would have known, that just two days from that conversation Pittsburgh would lose their beloved Mayor. Just like Pittsburgh we have lost our political icon. Bernie, just like Mayor O'Connor, loved this area of living. Bernie also - like Bob O'Connor - seemed to be everywhere. No matter what event you would be at, there would be Bernie. Always smiling, always waving, and always a kind word to be said. He was a quiet but strong man, who fought fiercely for the things he believed in. Let's not forget his radio days. Or all the selfless hours he put into being on the school board, also being School Board President for many years. Then on to I believe his third term as Commissioner. From the young to the elderly Indiana County residents will share in our mourning of Bernie Smith. My thoughts and prayers go out to Commissioner Smith's family. I will forever miss his smiling face, and waving hand. In Loving Memory of our Democratic Friend.
